These comments on the ESV rendering "the blood of his cross" made me think of a possible problem, at least with a literal translation into some languages. My first thought on reading "the blood of his cross" was, can a cross, a wooden object, have blood? In English, it cannot. But I am sure there some languages in which trees do have blood - what we call sap. In such a language a literal translation would be totally misleading, because it would be understood as teaching something about the sap of the wood from which the cross was made.
